Solana vs. Avalanche
A neutral side-by-side look at Solana (SOL) and Avalanche (AVAX): live market data, how each one works and what it's for.
Solana and Avalanche are both fast proof-of-stake platforms launched in 2020. Solana runs everything on one high-speed chain. Avalanche runs an Ethereum-compatible main chain and lets projects launch their own connected blockchains.

Key facts side by side
| Measure | Solana SOL | Avalanche AVAX |
|---|---|---|
| Launched | 2020 (March, mainnet beta) | 2020 (September) |
| Created by | Anatoly Yakovenko and Raj Gokal (Solana Labs); Solana Foundation | Ava Labs, led by Emin Gün Sirer |
| How it's secured | Proof of stake, with proof of history for timekeeping | Proof of stake (Avalanche consensus) |
| What it's for | Fast, low-fee transactions for trading, payments and apps | Fast smart contracts and custom connected blockchains for apps, games and finance |
| Maximum supply | No fixed maximum (new SOL is issued at a declining inflation rate) | 720,000,000 AVAX |
How they differ
- Architecture: one fast chain (Solana) vs. a network of chains, including custom ones for specific apps (Avalanche).
- Compatibility: Avalanche's C-Chain works with Ethereum wallets like MetaMask. Solana uses its own wallets and programming model.
- Supply: AVAX is capped at 720 million and fees are burned. SOL has no fixed maximum.
- Ecosystem: Solana has more trading and consumer activity; Avalanche is popular for custom chains in gaming and finance.

Questions
Is Solana better than Avalanche?
Neither is better in general. They take different approaches to scaling and target different kinds of projects. This isn't advice to buy either.
Why is one coin's price so much higher than the other's?
The price of a single coin mostly reflects how many coins exist. Solana and Avalanche have very different supplies, so comparing prices per coin is misleading. Market cap (price × coins in circulation) is a better measure of size; see market cap explained.
Where does the live data come from?
From CoinGecko's public API, averaged across many exchanges and refreshed about once a minute. The facts table comes from each project's own documentation and the references listed under Sources.
