How to create a cryptocurrency
Making a token takes minutes. Making one that's worth anything is a different story.
There are two ways: build a whole new blockchain with its own coin (a huge software and security project), or create a token on an existing blockchain like Ethereum or Solana, which can take minutes and a small network fee. Creating a token is easy; giving it real value, and doing it legally, is hard.
Two very different paths
| Compare | New blockchain (a coin) | Token on an existing chain |
|---|---|---|
| Examples | Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana | USDC, most meme coins and app tokens |
| Effort | Years of engineering, plus attracting miners or validators to secure it | A short smart contract or a no-code token tool |
| Cost | Very high | Often just a network fee |
| Security | You must secure a whole network | Inherits the host chain's security |
How a token is created
- Choose a blockchain and token standard (on Ethereum, ERC-20).
- Set the name, symbol, total supply and any rules (for example, whether more can be created later).
- Deploy the smart contract, paying the network fee.
- The tokens now exist in the creator's wallet. To be tradeable, someone has to provide a market, for example by adding the token and another asset to a decentralized exchange.
The hard parts
- Value: millions of tokens exist and most become worthless within days. See how many cryptocurrencies are there.
- Law: selling a token to the public as an investment can make it a security under US law, with registration rules and penalties. Get legal advice before selling anything.
- Code risk: bugs in a token contract can't easily be fixed once deployed.
The same ease that lets anyone create a token lets scammers launch, hype and abandon them (rug pulls). Treat brand-new tokens as extremely risky.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to create a cryptocurrency?
A token on an existing chain can cost little more than a network fee. A new blockchain can cost millions in development and security.
Is it legal to create a cryptocurrency?
Creating one generally is. Selling it to the public as an investment can bring securities laws into play, so get legal advice first.
