Solo mining odds calculator
Solo or “lottery” mining means one miner trying to win a whole block reward alone. See your real odds of winning, how long you'd expect to wait, and what the electricity costs meanwhile.
How it's calculated
- Your share of the network = your hashrate ÷ network hashrate
- Blocks you'd expect per day = 144 × your share
- Chance of at least one block in t days = 1 − e−(blocks per day × t) (each block is an independent draw)
- Expected wait = 1 ÷ blocks per day
- Average earnings = blocks per day × reward. A solo miner almost always earns nothing; this is what a pool would pay you on average, before the pool's fee.
Network hashrate is measured in exahashes per second (EH/s): 1 EH/s is a million TH/s. Read can you still mine Bitcoin at home? for what these numbers mean in practice, and what is crypto mining? for how mining works.
Questions
Can a solo miner really win a block?
Yes. Small solo miners have occasionally found blocks and won the full reward. But the odds for a single small device are often around one in several thousand per year, so for almost everyone it's a lottery ticket, not income.
Is pool mining better?
A pool combines many miners and splits each reward by work contributed, so you get small, regular payouts instead of a tiny chance at a big one. Over time the average is about the same, minus the pool's fee.
Will mining Bitcoin on my laptop or phone make money?
No. Bitcoin mining has been dominated by specialized ASIC machines for years. A laptop's chance of finding a block is effectively zero, and its electricity costs more than any average earnings.
