Dogecoin vs. Shiba Inu
A neutral side-by-side look at Dogecoin (DOGE) and Shiba Inu (SHIB): live market data, how each one works and what it's for.
Dogecoin and Shiba Inu are the two best-known meme coins, both based on the Shiba Inu dog. Dogecoin (2013) runs on its own proof-of-work blockchain and keeps creating new coins. Shiba Inu (2020) is a token on Ethereum with a supply fixed at launch at 1 quadrillion.

Key facts side by side
| Measure | Dogecoin DOGE | Shiba Inu SHIB |
|---|---|---|
| Launched | 2013 (December) | 2020 (August) |
| Created by | Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer | "Ryoshi" (a pseudonym) |
| How it's secured | Proof of work (Scrypt), merge-mined with Litecoin | No blockchain of its own: an ERC-20 token secured by Ethereum's proof of stake |
| What it's for | Tipping, small payments and trading: the original meme coin | A meme token with community projects and its own layer 2, Shibarium |
| Maximum supply | No maximum: 10,000 new DOGE are created with every block | 1 quadrillion SHIB created at launch; a large share has since been burned |
How they differ
- Blockchain: Dogecoin has its own network, mined together with Litecoin. SHIB is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum, with a layer 2 called Shibarium.
- Supply: Dogecoin adds 10,000 DOGE per block, about 5 billion a year, with no cap. SHIB's supply was fixed at launch and a large share has been burned.
- Price per coin: SHIB's price has many zeros because there are hundreds of trillions of tokens. That doesn't make it "cheaper" than DOGE; compare market caps.
- Origin: Dogecoin was made as a joke by two engineers; SHIB was launched by an anonymous creator called "Ryoshi."

Questions
Is Dogecoin better than Shiba Inu?
Neither is better. Both are meme coins whose prices are driven mostly by attention and sentiment, and both can fall very far. This isn't advice to buy either.
Will Shiba Inu reach the price of Dogecoin?
For SHIB to cost what one DOGE costs, its total market value would have to be millions of times larger than today, because there are so many more SHIB. Compare market caps, not prices per coin.
Why is one coin's price so much higher than the other's?
The price of a single coin mostly reflects how many coins exist. Dogecoin and Shiba Inu have very different supplies, so comparing prices per coin is misleading. Market cap (price × coins in circulation) is a better measure of size; see market cap explained.
